SAVANNAH - Bruce L. Jernigan, Jr., age 82, died Sunday, September 21, 2008, at Tara Nursing Home.
The Savannah native served in the United States Marine Corps Amphibious Forces in the Pacific during World War II and with the First Marine Division, 5th Battalion, Charlie Co., during the Korean Conflict. He retired on December 31, 1983 as an offshore staff member of the United Nations. Mr. Jernigan was a former employee with the Seaboard Railroad, owner of Jernigan General Services and was a longtime employee of Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, beginning in 1985. He was a co-founder of the 7th District Fire Department.
He was a member of the First Christian Church.
Mr. Jernigan was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Goodman Jernigan and two sisters, Thelma I. Clark and Lutrelle H. Snedeker.
Surviving are three sons, Bruce L. Jernigan, III and his wife, Peggy, Vaughn D. Jernigan and his wife, Donnie, and Dave C. Jernigan, all of Savannah; two sisters, Loretta Bader of Piria, IL, and Gloria E. Smith of Camden, SC; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
